In the quiet of Namaqualand's red earth, a lonely boy named Kia finds a broken robot in a local dump — knee-high, six-legged, and unlike anything available on the market.

Max was built to observe Mars. He carries forty years of data from another world, including something he encrypted so carefully that even he cannot remember what it contains.

As Kia repairs Max and the two learn to read the world through each other's eyes, a profound bond forms between the boy who never fitted in and the machine discarded for being too precise.
